The global WTE market is expected to reach USD 37.64 billion by 2020, according to a new study. Strong shift in trend towards energy security around the world coupled with decreasing landfill area is expected to remain a key driving factor for the global WTE market. Government support in the form of tax benefits and government subsidies are also expected to have positive influence on the market growth.

Asia Pacific is expected to register highest growth rate,Increasing industrial waste in China and India on account of growing industrialization rates coupled with government initiatives to promote sustainable energy generation is expected to drive the regional market. Low cost technology development in China and India is expected to pose challenge to established companies.

The Indian Government has recognized waste to energy as a renewable technology and supports it through various subsidies and incentives. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is actively promoting all the technology options available for energy recovery from urban and industrial wastes. MNRE is also promoting the research on waste to energy by providing financial support for R&D projects on cost sharing basis in accordance with the R&D Policy of the MNRE.In addition to that, MNRE also provides financial support for projects involving applied R&D and studies on resource assessment, technology up-gradation and performance evaluation. The official said for making solid waste management (SWM) projects viable, there is a proposal to provide market development assistance and the government will also make it mandatory for the state electricity boards to procure power from these units. Besides Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) is also working to determine the tariff for the power generated from waste-to-energy plants to boost their financial viability. In order to improve the scope for waste-to-energy projects, the official said Power Ministry is in the process of amending the Electricity Act-2003 to include a provision for State Electricity Discoms to mandatorily purchase all power generated from municipal solid waste. A proposal to this effect is likely to come up before the Cabinet soon. CERC is also working on determining a generic tariff for solid waste-to-energy projects.Determination of generic tariff will boost the financial viability of waste-to-energy plants in the country.

As per estimates by the urban development ministry, about Rs.65,000 crore of public and private investments will flow into city waste management, cleanliness and waste-to energy projects over the next three years. The central government is giving Rs.15,000 crore to municipal corporations over the next three years under the Swachh Bharat Mission for cleanliness, waste-management and waste-to-energy projects. It has also requested these bodies to give priority to these projects while utilising the cash transfers that they get from central government as mandated by the 14th Finance Commission. These allocations, together with private partnerships, could result in an investment of about Rs.65,000 crore in these projects.Private firms looking for guaranteed returns from micro-power plants have set sights on projects to generate electricity from municipal refuse.

As many as 24 waste-to-energy projects to produce 233MW are currently in different stages of construction and five projects of 79MW have already been tendered, adding up to a total of 312 MW. Once all this capacity comes on stream, India's waste-to-energy capacity will go up by six-fold from the current 53MW produced from five such projects.New waste-to-energy capacity is coming up in places like Nalgonda district and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in Telangana, Bawana and Kidwai Nagar in Delhi, Jabalpur and Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Pune and Kolhapur in Maharashtra, Pallavaram in Chennai, Allahabad and Agra in Uttar Pradesh and Bathinda and Jalandhar in Punjab.Hyderabad, Pune, Indore and Rajkot have floated tenders for new projects which are to be completed early in 2018.

China's waste incineration sector has experienced rapid growth from 2011 to 2015-a period encompassing the government's 12th five-year plan. Chinese waste-to-energy plants that have either been operational or under construction are expected to number over 300 by the end of 2015.According to the 12th five national urban msw treatment facilities construction plan, the target total size of incineration project is 307,200 tons / day.Although in the end of 2015, the national total incineration capacity was 233,000 tons / day, but the size of the project under construction is still about 10 thousands tons / day, complete the construction scale planning basically.Planning completion is mainly due to the capital market's high interest.Currently, most of the city and the county's solid waste can be effectively collected, disposed in waste incineration power plants and landfill. But there are still gaps in waste disposal facilities, the new facility is still one of the main tasks of the current and the next five-year plan.In accordance with national planning, the national MSW incineration capacity in 2020 will exceed 400 thousands tons / day in 2025 up to 500 thousands tons / day.100 New waste incineration power plants needs to build in the next 5 years, then the Chinese demand for incineration facilities will reach a relatively stable status. But the amount of accumulation and qualitative improvement are quite important, particularly formal implementation of waste incineration emissions new standards for operation of the facility put forward higher requirements, facility upgrades will be important elements of the next five years, China's solid waste disposal facilities (sanitary landfills landfill, incineration plant) construction and development is very fast, a number of construction and operation of the facility has a large room for improvement, there are some early construction incineration plants need to be upgraded or reset.

As "Thirteen Five Year Plan" (draft), food waste treatment capacity to reach 75,000 tons / day by the end of 2020.compared to 30,000 tons / day in the 12th 5 planning, this figure means that food waste treatment capacity will be doubled in the next five years, food waste treatment industry will usher in the great development space. If we produces 100,000 tons per day as 12th 5 period, the size of the market will reach 20 billion RMB after the collection and transportation system are completed,The disposal project construction market will reach 50 billion RMB- 100 billion RMB in case of investment by 0.5 million RMB-1 million RMB /ton.

Recently the government released "MSW incineration operation regulatory standards CJJ/T212-2015" and "Solid waste incineration plant maintenance procedures" China's 13th Five-Year Solid Waste Treatment Plan framework will be released soon as well.MSW disposal market investment space is around 100 billion RMB during the 13th 5 years in China.

Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has put solid waste management on the national agenda in a bid to address the country's solid waste disposal problems. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is to draw up a plan to manage solid and hazardous waste in the country while the Interior Ministry will be responsible for its implementation.Interior Minister General Anupong Paojinda said the authorities did not have proper and sustainable guidelines on garbage management in the past, which is why 30 million tonnes of waste has been accumulated. Thailand would need up to Bt1 billion to properly dispose it,the government was looking into the Private Investment in State Undertakings Act to see if it can get the private sector to invest in waste-to-energy power plants.Thailand currently produces 70,000 tons waste per day, waste disposal has become a major environmental problem.Thailand needs to build more than 90 waste incineration plants at least as per day plant process 600 tons.adviser to the Thai Prime Minister and Deputy Secretary General of the Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand Akanit said, as an agricultural country, msw generation help Thai people to resolve msw issues, bring good economic and environmental effects as well.

Accelerating progress in waste-to-energy,responding to increasing energy demands, the Indonesian government recently set itself a target of producing 35,000 megawatts ( MW ) of power to support economic growth of 7 percent per annum, an objective which requires an estimated US$35 billion in investment over the next five years. It said that given a positive legal and regulatory environment for investors, which the new Presidential Regulation No. 38/2015 on public private partnerships will help to foster, the future looks bright for WTE projects in Indonesia and their ability to contribute to this challenging target.
The country is generating and will continue to generate the types of waste required for waste-to-energy and its climate provides the right conditions for the waste to break down and produce the gas needed to generate electricity.

Malaysia is gradually experiencing scarcity of available land for development. As such, the local government is currently looking into the possibility of employing high-end and large-scale incineration processes to address this issue. MSW as a combustion source for thermochemical conversion application, represents a two-pronged approach in solving its disposal dilemma as well as providing a source of energy fuel. In Malaysia, energy recovery initiatives are focused on application of waste-to-energy (WTE) as well as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) technologies. Aspects regarding MSW landfill gas capture and energy generation are also discussed since they may directly influence (or potentially compete against) the widespread adoption of RDF technologies. A relatively successful RDF pilot plant in Malaysia is highlighted as a case study. It is deemed that application of large-scale incineration technologies in Malaysia is inevitable as opening of new landfill areas will ultimately cease in the future.
Hong Kong is facing a mounting waste crisis, plans to use traditional mass burn thermal treatment for its first planned waste to energy facility and steer clear of advanced technologies such as plasma gasification, the Hong Kong government has chosen a moving-grate system for its planned 3000 tonne Shek Kwu Chau waste to energy facility, the delegates of the fact finding tour also studied plasma gasification.

Singapore's sixth waste-to-energy plant will be able to incinerate 3,600 tonnes of waste and generate 120 megawatts of electricity per day.

Australian waste-to-energy market is poised for significant growth. With the first specific energy-from-waste policy to be finalised by the NSW Energy Protection Agency, municipal solid waste (MSW)-to-energy is expected to pick up pace, with a few projects in NSW and Western Australia already in the works (pending approval or funding). The MSW sector is expected to see strong growth between 2015 and 2020, with installed capacity reaching around 80 MW and MSW treatment capacity about 12 million tonnes per annum by 2020.
