The Telecommunications Carriers Association was established in 1987 with the aim of contributing to the sound growth of the telecommunications industry and to improved convenience for the public by addressing common issues faced by telecommunications carriers that possess communication facilities. At our inception the association was comprised of 16 companies, but membership has now expanded to include 63 companies (as of April, 2012).
During that period, the telecommunications industry has shown continued strong growth. Today, we have diverse communications devices to connect to broadband networks and access to attractive services. With the dramatic expansion of the global telecommunications market, a host of business models have been emerging.
Japan is currently facing various challenges, including the construction of a secure and safe society and globalization of the economy and society as well as the need for a speedy recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The active utilization of information and communications technology (ICT) has become indispensable for the appropriate handling and solving of these issues. Accordingly, the people of Japan have even greater expectations of telecommunications carriers.
Given this, I believe that we are charged with the great responsibility of fulfilling our social responsibility as an incorporated association whose members are telecommunications carriers at the very heart of ICT. In FY 2012 I would like to continue strengthening initiatives to support consumers, to serve society, and to contribute to the sound growth of the telecommunications industry while making efforts to develop and maintain robust communication networks, an important infrastructure that is essential to the livelihoods of people nationwide. The Telecommunications Carriers Association will all work as hard as we possibly can towards the further growth of the info-communications industry, with our first priority being increased convenience for the people of Japan.
